EDUCATION
Homework
At HLC, we understand that schoolwork is just one part of a child’s wider learning journey. That’s why we make sure all homework is relevant, meaningful, and supportive for every pupil.
Continuously learning, outside the classroom.
Reading
Reading is the key to learning across all subjects. Pupils are expected to read at least five times a week at home to improve their fluency, understanding, and comprehension. This practice opens doors to future learning opportunities. Reading is recorded in Reading Diaries, and children will be asked questions about the books they have read.
Phonics
All Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 pupils practice phonics daily using the HLC Phonics scheme to build a strong foundation in reading.
Spelling
From Year 1 to Year 6, pupils receive weekly spellings to practice at home. They can use Spelling Frame – an online platform with resources, tests, and games – to support their learning. Spelling is practiced in class throughout the week and tested every Friday.
Mathematics
Pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 have access to TT Rockstars, an engaging online platform to practice times tables. We regularly hold individual and class challenges to motivate and reward students for their efforts.
Topic Work
Our thematic curriculum means pupils receive half-termly project homework related to their next topic. These projects might include posters, dioramas, research, presentations, or other creative tasks that encourage deeper exploration.
Year 6 Additional Support
Year 6 pupils benefit from extra revision opportunities using CGP books, SATs Bootcamp, and Bedrock Learning to help prepare for their upcoming assessments.
